One thing that makes me irate is rudeness from colleagues over the phone. My attempt to refer a patient to a fellow registrar started with him belittling my position (unaccredited vs accredited) then going on at length as to why my consult was, as he put it, “bullshit”. When I asked him to see the patient today because my consultant wanted her seen today, his response was “Oh you’re using that excuse then” sarcastically. Then he crapped on about how getting him to see the patient was bullshit again. He then saw the patient, called me back and rubbished our management of the patient.
Was any of this verbal abuse necessary? No, but it’s routine behaviour in medicine, and usually people in other jobs are astonished and disgusted by it.
